I like the idea of using biodegradable materials
and natural colours. I also prefer to avoid the traditional coffin shape
in favour of something more rounded and foetal shaped.
The materials used in the Eco-crib should also include something connected
to the person that died, for example, articles of their clothing or other
personal items.
The choice of a suitable burial site should again reflect the preferences
of the deceased, if possible, for example, I would like to be buried under
a newly planted tree, and the tree would become my memorial.
To make the Eco-crib, I cut twigs from an old apple tree in my garden.
This tree has played a part in our family life for many years; we sat
under it, ate meals under it, cooked with its apples and my children built
a tree house in it. Our family cat, which is still with us after 22 years,
has spent many happy hours climbing and sitting in it.
The twigs were used for the frame and the material was from a very old
cotton bedspread that had belonged to my mother and my grandmother before
that. It was quite threadbare but I couldn't part with it and I couldn't
have found a better use for it.
